Queen Victoria Market

Queen Victoria Market, known by Melburnian’s as the Vic Market, is more than just a Melbourne shopping mecca – it’s an historic landmark, a tourist attraction and a local shopping institution. This vast and vibrant centre of trade and commerce has served consumers needs since 1878.

Spread over 7 hectares, it is the largest open air Market in the southern hemisphere, and a great place to see and experience Melbourne’s many diverse cultures. Almost one thousand traders sell everything from exotic Australian fruit and vegetables and local and imported gourmet foods, meat, fish and poultry to hardware, clothing and authentic Australian artifacts and souvenirs.

This is probably the best of the four Melbourne markets to visit and is one of the most popular visitor attractions in Victoria. Guided tours are available Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings.

The Market is located at 513 Elizabeth Street, only a 7 minute walk from Melbourne Central Station (along Elizabeth Street) and Flagstaff Station (along William Street). You can also get to the market on the Melbourne Visitor Shuttle Bus. Get off at stop 8 for the Market.

Prahran Market

The Prahran Market is one of the premier fresh food markets in Melbourne. It has existed on its present site in commercial Road, South Yarra, some 200 metres from Chapel Street, for over 125 years. The market has a variety of stalls and shops selling fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, fish and deli foods, as well as cafes. The market is not open on Mondays and Wednesdays (Sundays has selected traders only).

Prahran Market is known as “the food lover’s market” because of the quality and range of the food on sale. For those looking for a special item, Prahran Market is the place to find those hard to get specialties including heritage varieties of fruit and veg, unusual poultry, game, seafood and exotic cheeses.

Prahran Market is the only market in Melbourne to have a dedicated Market Square where the community enjoy performances, cafes and a children’s playground.

The market is open from 7.00am to 5.00pm on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It is open from 10.00am to 5.00pm on Sunday.

Arts Centre Sunday Market

Every Sunday, from 10.00am – 4.00pm, local artisans fill Arts Centre Melbourne’s Lawn to showcase their unique, handmade goods ranging from arts and crafts to freshly made delicacies. It is located at 100 St. Kilda Road.

Everything on offer is produced locally, making the market a real favourite for those seeking one-of-a-kind treasures for themselves or as gifts.

Of all the Melbourne Markets, this is perhaps the easiest for visitors to Melbourne to reach, being just a short walk over the bridge from Flinders Street Station, heading south. The Arts Centre, and the market, is situated on busy St. Kilda Road. This Sunday Market is a very popular weekly event, with the relaxed feel of a regional craft market set against the backdrop of Melbourne’s buzzing arts precinct.

St. Kilda Esplanade Market

This too is a Sunday market, in popular St. Kilda, just a short distance from the beach and Luna Park. Open every Sunday 10.00am to 4.00pm.

The Market has more than 130 stalls offering a variety of original art and handcrafts, packaged and hot food. The stallholders are the makers so you can find out all about the product you are purchasing from the person who created it. You’ll find the Market every Sunday on the Upper Esplanade, St Kilda, between Cavell & Fitzroy Streets.
